    Decatur is the county seat of DeKalb County and is located 5 miles Northeast of Downtown Atlanta with an estimated population of 26,000. It seems to be larger because of the numerous Zip Codes assigned to the city, but fall in unincorporated DeKalb County. It shares its western border with the city of Atlanta and unincorporated DeKalb County. The Druid Hills neighborhood is to the north of Downtown Decatur.

    Why Do People Live in Decatur?

    Downtown Decatur is a mix of shops, restaurants and condominium buildings along with apartment options. It has a “small town” feel, but also offers there MARTA stations. (Downtown, East Lake and Avondale) Unlike all other cities in DeKalb County, the City of Decatur has its own school system, and is an important factor for people choosing to live here. Neighborhoods of Decatur include places like Oakhurst, Downtown Decatur, Clairemont, Decatur Heights and others.

    The city has a thriving arts and festival scene…there is the Decatur Arts Festival each May and the very popular AJC Decatur Book Festival. Other festivals include, Blues and Bluegrass, Craft Beer, and the Decatur Wine Festival. Known for its restaurants and food scene, it has received numerous mentions in national publications. Craft breweries include Brick Store Pub, Wild Heaven Beer, Three Taverns Brewery and Blue Tarp Brewing Company.

    What Are the Neighborhoods Like?

    There is a lot of historic charm in and around Decatur.  You will find many homes that were built from the 1920’s all the way to new construction in 2017-2020. From tree-lined streets to townhome enclaves, there are many living options in the city. Living close to the Downtown area offers the option to leave the car parked and walk to restaurants, shopping, events and possibly even the MARTA station.

    What’s Going On In or Nearby Decatur?

    Just outside of Decatur is Emory University. This is the main campus of the university and a major employment center. As of 2018 (thereabouts) plans have begun to build a light rail transit line from the Lindbergh MARTA station in Buckhead to the campus.  Fernbank Museum of Natural History is also just outside the city limits. The Atlanta VA Medical Center is just north of Downtown on Clairmont Road.
